What are Bed sores / Pressure Ulcer’s?

Bedsores — also called pressure ulcers and decubitus ulcers — are injuries to skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin. This tends to be due to no pressure relieving methods being put in place for the patient.

People most at risk of bedsores have medical conditions that limit their ability to change positions or cause them to spend most of their time in a bed or chair. Depending on their condition the patient may also not be able to tell you if an area on their body is sore.

Pressure ulcers are painful. As a caregiver, one of the most important things you can do to keep your patient comfortable is to prevent one from developing. People with dementia, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, circulation problems and malnutrition are at higher risk.

How to prevent bed sores (pressure ulcers)

You can prevent bed sores by frequent repositioning, however, this method can have a risk factor of injury for the care giver. Whether you work in a hospital / care facility and have multiple patients to look after a day, or care for a loved one at home and have not been properly trained in patient handling, you need to look after your own physical health too.

That’s where the Alerta addition to our pressure relieving care range comes in.

Pressure relieving mattresses mean better care for the patient, and less patient handling for the carer.

In the mean time, here is a run down of what each mattress range offers.

Replacement Mattress

Replacement mattresses are sometimes called air or airflow mattresses. They use air cells which inflate and deflate alternately, powered by a pump /control unit. As the cells alternate half the cells deflate and the pressure is removed from that area. As this is a cyclical process all areas of the body experience pressure relief as well as movement.

Overlay Mattress

An overlay Mattress is designed to be placed on top of an already existing mattress. These can be made as air mattresses, gel or foam.

Static Mattress

Static mattresses deliver pressure relief through the use of high quality foam. Combinations of foam are utilised and some are castellated to further reduce shear and friction.
